I\\u2019m sure this comes as no surprise but discipline\\nitself is extremely hard and boring if you have no motivation.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Anyway, over the last few weeks I tried a few things and have finally gotten \\u201Cmostly\\u201D back on the track. It\\u2019s still not where it used to be, but as we say in this community\\n\\u201CDoing better is a recursive process\\u201D \\uD83D\\uDE09\"), mdx(\"h1\", {\n    \"id\": \"step-1-stop-beating-myself-up\"\n  }, \"Step 1: Stop beating myself up.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Everytime I was on my phone looking at instagram, lying on my bed wasting away hours, or sitting in front of the TV, I\\u2019d criticize myself on how I \\u201Cused to be\\u201D so disciplined and how this is all a waste of time.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"So after a few weeks of self-pitying, I wrote down this quote on my whiteboard:\"), mdx(\"p\", null, mdx(\"em\", {\n    parentName: \"p\"\n  }, \"\\u201CAt the end of your feelings is nothing, but at the end of every principle is promise.\\u201D\")), mdx(\"p\", null, \"So the \\u201Cfeeling\\u201D of not being good enough or as good as I was was useless/unproductive/wasteful. I had to simply rely on the principle of the practises and build myself back up slowly.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"It\\u2019s funny how since the day we are born, we\\u2019re taught to listen to our parents, teachers, mentors, elders, etc. but never to ourselves. The \\u201Cself\\u201D in self-confidence is given so little value\\nthat most of us grow up without having any idea on how to be our own advisor/mentor/friend.\\nWe\\u2019re taught to be self-critical so that people who are coaching us don\\u2019t have to! They tell us what to do, and if we don\\u2019t do it, we punish ourselves long before they get a chance to.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Then we slowly grow up and realize we\\u2019re all on our own when it comes to getting stuff done and taking responsibility. But now there\\u2019s no one to give us any directions or instructions.\\nSo what we\\u2019re left with, is the self-critical part, without any of the self-love part and we all know where that leads us down to.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"How are you supposed to love yourself if you don\\u2019t even trust yourself to keep track of your health and wellness. How do you even get anything done when you never give yourself applause for a task done successfully\\nwhile never lettting yourself off the hook for one small thing going wrong.\\nHow do I even beging to build discipline when I can feel it in my heart that I have no motivation.\"), mdx(\"h1\", {\n    \"id\": \"step-2-do-tough-shit\"\n  }, \"Step 2: DO. It was super easy for me when I was self-motivated but was that just a fluke?\\nDo I now just wait for the motivation to surface again? What if it never comes back?\\nAll these thoughts had taken over my mind and I just had to stop, breathe, and collect some data and do some research.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"I started researching how disciplined people remain that way \\uD83E\\uDD14 and what do they do to build it and found 2 simple points:\"), mdx(\"h3\", {\n    \"id\": \"--pain-is-relative-to-all-of-us\"\n  }, \"- Pain is relative to all of us.\"), mdx(\"h3\", {\n    \"id\": \"--incremental-change-is-the-way-to-go\"\n  }, \"- Incremental change is the way to go.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"These two steps were mind numbingly obvious and revolutionary at the same time. The mantra was simple! You want to do things that seem hard to you? DO MORE OF IT!\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"The more \\u201Cpain\\u201D you are used to, the more easy/normal it seems. It\\u2019s astonishing the things humans can get used to!\\nWe can endure weeks of hunger, months of isolation, years of trauma and come out stronger on the other side.\"), mdx(\"h3\", {\n    \"id\": \"you-want-to-build-immutable-discipline-step-outside-your-comfort-zone-endure-some-pain-face-your-fears-listen-to-every-cliche-out-there-because-it-holds-some-truth-\"\n  }, \"You want to build immutable discipline? Step outside your comfort zone, endure some pain, face your fears, listen to every cliche out there because it holds some truth!!! \\uD83D\\uDD25\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Get used to being uncomfortable, and before you know it, you are extremely comfortable with whatever life throws at you!\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"I remembered how easy it was for me to take ice cold showers before my vacation, because I had been doing them for months by then.\\nWhen I started last year, I couldn\\u2019t even breathe when cold water touched my body and I had to ease myself into it.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"So as you do more tough shit, your self confidence gets this massive boost! When you set goals for yourself and meet them, it creates this feedback cycle of trust within you.\\nPeople who consistently seem to do better at life are simply just making small promises to themselves and following through.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"You want to see what crazy difference a small change can make?\\nPromise yourself to workout every single day for 30 days and drink plenty of water and eat healthy and see the results at the end. Once you do something like that, going to the gym 4 days a week\\nand eating a relatively healthy diet doesn\\u2019t seem all that hard, because guess what, you have done something much tougher!\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Now you may not see any immediate benefits, and frankly may hate it the first few weeks. But if you truly believe in the principle of excercise and how it\\u2019s immensely beneficial for your mind and body, you\\u2019d aspire for that promise.\\nYou have to trade some short term comfort for long term benefits and once you do that a few times, instead of focusing on the short term pain, you start focusing on the long term gain. \"), mdx(\"h1\", {\n    \"id\": \"how-to-start\"\n  }, \"How to start\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Now maybe you\\u2019re wondering where to start for yourself! Our lives aren\\u2019t the same, perhaps neither our goals, nor our lifestyles even.\\nWhat my suggestion would be, is to break the \\u201Cpain\\u201D in smaller goals and achieve them no matter what, unless you\\u2019re in the hospital or are causing youself long term damage,\\nyou better get out of bed and do the work.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Most importantly, be kind to yourself if you fall off the wagon, AND celebrate small wins! I want to meditate daily\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"10 minutes is too high a goal, start with just 1 minute. 1 minute every.single.day! Before bed, when you wake up, right after you eat, whatever!\\nYou choose and stick to it. Meditated for straight 10 days? Great job! What activities, rules, and parameters do I need to setup for this.\\nBased on some google searches and lifestyle choices, I chose the following 3 things.\"), mdx(\"h3\", {\n    \"id\": \"1-limit-phone-screen-time-to-30-minutes-a-day\"\n  }, \"#1. Limit phone screen time to 30 minutes a day.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Boy was this HARD! I\\u2019m a \\u201Chardcore casual user\\u201D \\uD83D\\uDE05\\nI don\\u2019t sit on my phone all day but while I wait for microwave to go off, code to compile, take a walk, or practically do anything that requires a little break, I\\u2019m on my phone.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"I browse Instagram more often that I care to admit and I check Slack practically all the time. So I implemented this rule to ensure I take small windows of boredom in my day.\\nThe need for stimulation was REAL!!! I was hoping it gets better after a week or so but gawd NO, I had to consciously tell myself to put the phone down and just BE.\\nTurns out I am not as in control as I thought I\\u2019d be, and this experiment was definitely a humility check.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"I was able to narrow down the phone checking to designated breaks and while I was taking rest between my sets at the gym and definitely didn\\u2019t stick to 30 minutes most days.\\nHowever, I can noticeably tell the difference in my focus levels and reduced craving of my phone.\"), mdx(\"h3\", {\n    \"id\": \"2-only-watch-tv-while-eating\"\n  }, \"#2. Only watch TV while eating.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"This wasn\\u2019t as bad tbh, I do generally only watch TV during meal breaks so I just had to find other things to fill my time when I\\u2019m bored instead of turning on the TV.\\nHowever, during meals I had this habit of letting the TV run for another epsiode or two, and that wasn\\u2019t particularly helping anything \\uD83D\\uDE05 (\", mdx(\"em\", {\n    parentName: \"p\"\n  }, \"I\\u2019m also one of those people who watches the same thing over and over again.\"), \")\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"So all I had to do was create a rule of turning off TV either when my meal is finished or when an epsiode finishes, whichever comes first!\\nI caught myself eating slower to watch the full episode, or just catch the beginning of the next one before turning it off, so just needed to remind myself why I\\u2019m doing this here and there.\"), mdx(\"h3\", {\n    \"id\": \"3-use-pomodoro-technique\"\n  }, \"#3. It\\u2019s the biggest checkpoint of them all. It\\u2019s long enough to do something substantial to inflict big change but not too long to forget your path/direction.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Bill Gates once said:\\n\", mdx(\"em\", {\n    parentName: \"p\"\n  }, \"\\u201CMost people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.\\u201D\"), \"\\nNot only is it easier for us to visualize a year\\u2019s worth of change compared to a decade, we also have nicely divided months that we can break down the goals further into. Ofcourse that\\u2019s not the only point of that quote, but I\\u2019m choosing to focus on that for now.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"So ever year I\\u2019d make resolutions and break them down by months so I can see what I may be able to achieve and check-in with myself if I am on-track to my next checkpoint.\\nFor 2020 however, I went with the strategy of no resolutions! That\\u2019s because 2019 was an \\u201Cinteresting\\u201D year for me.\\nIt taught me many lessons and I made several big life changes! I quit my job, moved to a new city, travelled solo, learnt about my mother\\u2019s past traumas, and ended a long term meaningful relationship; not neccessarily in that order.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"So for 2020 I had no resolutions. I just wanted to \\u201Clive in the moment\\u201D, observe and enjoy life as it happened. It was amazing and miserable for a myriad of reasons but it was nice not being trapped working towards something just because I set a goal for myself at the start of the year.\\nAs I\\u2019m sure we can all relate, 2020 taught us a lot of lessons! So naturally before I could sit down and plan 2021, it was monumental to think about 2020 and all the lessons I learnt through the year! I cannot stress the importance of looking back before you can plan ahead.\\nIt\\u2019s like switching lanes or taking turns without doing your shoulder checks and looking in the rearview/side mirrors. It\\u2019s bad and you may injure yourself quite badly \\uD83E\\uDD15\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"To start things off, I took the first week of this year to reflect and plan \\uD83D\\uDCD4\\uD83E\\uDD14\\nSo for 2021, I decided to try something new for me! I decided to have goals that have a count but no upper limit. For e.g. Instead of \", mdx(\"em\", {\n    parentName: \"p\"\n  }, \"\\u201Cread 12 books this year\\u201D\"), \", it\\u2019s \", mdx(\"em\", {\n    parentName: \"p\"\n  }, \"\\u201CRead More: 0\\u201D\"), \", and I will increase the number with each book I finish this calendar year.\\nIt\\u2019ll be interesting to see the metrics at the end of the year! This way I won\\u2019t be sad if I read 4 books because my goal was 12, I would just be grateful that I read 4 \\uD83D\\uDE04 in addition to whatever crazy things that I tried.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Now I don\\u2019t neccessarily recommend this strategy unless you have summoned either some self discipline or are extremely intentional and mindful about what you are doing each day.\\nIt\\u2019s very easy to not go to the gym if you don\\u2019t have a goal to measure, but if you\\u2019ve been hitting it pretty hard, it can be very relaxing to just take a few days off to recover and truly enjoy your time off and not sweat (pun intended)  about the goal counter mismatch.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"So without further ado, I\\u2019d like to share my 2020 reflections and what I have in store for 2021 :)\"), mdx(\"h1\", {\n    \"id\": \"2020-reflections\"\n  }, \"2020 Reflections\"), mdx(\"h3\", {\n    \"id\": \"1-be-that-friend-instead-of-wishing-for-one-\"\n  }, \"#1. We all love when our friends do stuff for us! In fact, the mutual give and recieve is a pretty strong basis of any human connection.\\nHowever, in the real world having unrealistic expectations is a pretty regular cause of unhappiness.\\nSo instead of wanting a friend who did \\u201Cx\\u201D, I decided to be \", mdx(\"em\", {\n    parentName: \"p\"\n  }, \"that\"), \" friend. I intentionally made effort in remembering birthdays (thanks Google calendar),\\nleaving random texts of how much I care for them, telling them I\\u2019m grateful for something they did, and some other small little gestures.\\nOfcourse, that doesn\\u2019t take away my want for validation (I\\u2019m still human afterall), but it helps immensely with strengthening bonds and connecting with my loved ones which in turn makes me happier \\uD83D\\uDE0B \"), mdx(\"h3\", {\n    \"id\": \"2-spending-a-little-never-hurt-anybody-\"\n  }, \"#2. Spending a little never hurt anybody. \\uD83D\\uDCB8\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"If you know me, you know I am an extreme saver. I generally don\\u2019t eat out, I walk most places, my wardrobe is mostly T-shirts I got from various tech companies, and I always ask the question of need/want before I spend money on anything.\\nLast year however, I bought a couple of things I didn\\u2019t need, but always wanted! I got myself a little roomba, some house plants, some books, and a new laptop, hell I even splurged for a PS4 pro!\\nThe amount of happiness these things have brought me in incalculable, even though I still save money on smaller things that add up, I occassionally let myself splurge a little because if not now, WHEN?\"), mdx(\"h3\", {\n    \"id\": \"3-its-ok-to-not-finish-some-things-\"\n  }, \"#3. It\\u2019s OK to not finish some things. \\uD83D\\uDEAB\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"To some extent, I\\u2019ve always been a obsessed with finishing anything I\\u2019ve started! Even If I am not enjoying a certain book, TV show, video game, or a movie, I push myself to sit through the whole thing to completion.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Well, not anymore, 30% in a book and not enjoying the writing style or narrative? Goodbye! TV Show season 3 started being super bad and doesn\\u2019t seem to recover? Adios!\\nI don\\u2019t need to absolutely see these through to the end and that\\u2019s completely ok.\"), mdx(\"h3\", {\n    \"id\": \"4-being-positive-is-hard-smiling-constantly-is-harder-but-very-worth-it-\"\n  }, \"#4. Being positive is hard, smiling constantly is harder; But very worth it! \\uD83D\\uDE0A\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Oh boy! This one made me have immense respect for people who \\u201Calways seems happy\\u201D. Many research shows that when you act like you are happy, subconsciously you start being more happy and satisfied in your life.\\nAnother bonus is people are more friendly with you and you are more likeable coz humans want to surround themselves with happy humans!\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"So if you\\u2019re like me, it\\u2019s much more easier to offer counter scenarios or suggestions on how things can go wrong, but very hard to offer supportive or positive recommendations.\\nIt took me a while to internalize \\u201Cwhat if it does\\u201D instead of \\u201Cwhat if it doesn\\u2019t\\u201D mindset. Risk assessment is important, but you can\\u2019t find something new by charting the same territories over and over.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"So by being extra mindful of what I say, I\\u2019ve been able to generally remain more positive in situations, laughing things off, and smile through life more easily.\"), mdx(\"h3\", {\n    \"id\": \"5-happines-is-a-choice-\"\n  }, \"#5. Life presents us MANY choices but happiness seems to one of the things we attribute to external circumstances.\\nI believe being happy is a conscious decision that we have to make every single day of our lives. Little things like smiling at yourself in the mirror while you brush your teeth,\\ndancing in the gym while waiting for your next set, remembering people who love you when you\\u2019re having a shitty day; choosing to look at the positive instead of the negative.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"For e.g. I injured my shoulder a few weeks back and had to take 2 weeks off of weightlifting, I was so happy that now I can focus more on my cardio and have more video game time!\\nThat\\u2019s because even though working out is one of my most favorite activities in the world, being sad about its unavailability wasn\\u2019t adding anything to my life.  \\xAF\", \"\\\\\", mdx(\"em\", {\n    parentName: \"p\"\n  }, \"(\\u30C4)\"), \"/\\xAF\"), mdx(\"h3\", {\n    \"id\": \"6-fck-it-just-do-it-\"\n  }, \"#6. If I continue that for days, my performance at the gym depletes, I\\u2019m prone to acne, and I crave more food.\\nHowever, If I eat a healthy serving of vegetables, protein, fat, and fibre; I feel energetic, satiated, and overall happier.
