Practicing a disciplined routine around the two will not only enhance your mindset, it\\u2019ll help boost your mood, give you a moment of calm, and improve your physical health as well.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Now before we get into it, I would like to very carefully make a distinction between self-control and self-discipline. What I am preaching here is self-discipline and NOT self-control.\\nThere\\u2019s plenty of articles on the web explaining the difference between the two, but the way I understand the two is you use self-discipline to guide yourself whereas self-control is to restrict yourself.\\nGenerally when you mess up, self-control can act more as negative reinforcement and frustration is only natural when that happens! Whereas, with self-discipline you accept what has happened and rely back on the principles of the discipline you are following.\\nI fall off the wagon more than I care to admit and with self-discipline, I am able to focus on the end goal instead of punishing myself for losing \\u201Ccontrol\\u201D \\uD83D\\uDE04\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"So let\\u2019s dive right into the why and how they can help you be your best self!\"), mdx(\"h1\", {\n    \"id\": \"why-breathwork-and-nutrition\"\n  }, \"Why Breathwork and Nutrition?\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Well, because suffocation and starvation are bad! \\uD83D\\uDE05\\uD83D\\uDE02 (Granted not my best joke, but I stand by it.)  \"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"I am not the first one and won\\u2019t be the last one to preach the infinite benefits of controlled breathwork! Trust me, when I learnt that most of us have been breathing wrong our entire lives, I was less than impressed.\\nHow did I screw this up? It\\u2019s just one in, one out right? I was waiting for someone to also tell me that I\\u2019ve been blinking wrong too! \\uD83D\\uDE12 \"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Many famous hindu and buddhist literature focus on controlling the breath to achieve enlightenment. \", mdx(\"a\", _extends({\n    parentName: \"p\"\n  }, {\n    \"href\": \"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pranayama\",\n    \"target\": \"_blank\",\n    \"rel\": \"noreferrer\"\n  }), \"Pranayama\"), \", a practise as old as yoga, focuses solely on breathwork between movements and how to best control it.\\nIn ancient yogic traditions, breath is also referred to as \\u201Clife-force\\u201D, which makes so much sense when you understand how it helps regulate our mood, mental health, blood flow, and everything else.\\nPeople like \", mdx(\"a\", _extends({\n    parentName: \"p\"\n  }, {\n    \"href\": \"https://www.wimhofmethod.com/\",\n    \"target\": \"_blank\",\n    \"rel\": \"noreferrer\"\n  }), \"Wim Hof\"), \" go around doing insane things like climbing the mount everest in shorts, just so people would listen to him about how breathing right has helped him do such an insane task.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"I personally have had many breakthroughs since I incorporated breathwork into my lifestyle. My workouts (weights AND cardio) are better, I generally feel more healthy, cold showers are enjoyable, I stay calm and clear-minded, Anxiety is a bit more controllable etc.\\nThere are a lot of different breathwork excercises you can do which we\\u2019ll talk about in the next section.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"As for Nutrition, we all know the adage \"), mdx(\"h4\", {\n    \"id\": \"you-are-what-you-eat\"\n  }, mdx(\"em\", {\n    parentName: \"h4\"\n  }, \"\\u201CYou are what you eat.\\u201D\")), mdx(\"h1\", {\n    \"id\": \"\"\n  }), mdx(\"p\", null, \"At first I didn\\u2019t believe in it much. I relied on the basic principle of calorie counting. As long as I am eating a reasonable number of calories, it shouldn\\u2019t matter what I eat right?\\nTurns out what you eat, matters a LOT MORE! Even nutritional experts agree that if you\\u2019re eating foods that are \\u201Cgood\\u201D for you within reason, calorie counting isn\\u2019t even remotely necessary.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Note that I said \\u201CNutrition\\u201D and not \\u201CDiet\\u201D, even though the word \\u201CDiet\\u201D itself is innocent, it comes with a negative connotation so we\\u2019re just going to avoid it.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Eating food that\\u2019s good for you plays a huge role in your energy levels, health, how you look, and how you feel all day. If I\\u2019ve eaten sugary junk foods all day, I\\u2019m going to feel happy while I\\u2019m ingesting them!\\nBut the rest of the day I\\u2019m going to be lethargic and uneasy. If I continue that for days, my performance at the gym depletes, I\\u2019m prone to acne, and I crave more food.\\nHowever, If I eat a healthy serving of vegetables, protein, fat, and fibre; I feel energetic, satiated, and overall happier. Then the rest is just domino effect:\"), mdx(\"h4\", {\n    \"id\": \"more-energy--better-workouts-focused-work\"\n  }, \"More energy = Better workouts, Focused Work\"), mdx(\"h4\", {\n    \"id\": \"healthier-body--cleaner-skin-self-confidence-less-likely-to-get-sick\"\n  }, \"Healthier body = Cleaner skin, Self confidence, Less likely to get sick\"), mdx(\"h4\", {\n    \"id\": \"proper-portions--less-snacking-less-hunger\"\n  }, \"Proper portions = Less snacking, Less hunger\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"etc. etc. You get the gist.  \"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"If you don\\u2019t want to go off my personal experience, read the biographies and listen to the podcasts! You breathe in for a count of 4, hold your breath for 4, and then exhale for a count of 4.\\nThat\\u2019s it! You do it for 10 minutes every morning and slowly work your way up with 5/5/5, 7/7/7, 4/7/8 etc. and play around with them.\\nThis practise will help you feel calm and grounded whenever you\\u2019re feeling anxious, or if you are breathing irregularly due to stress.\")), mdx(\"li\", {\n    parentName: \"ul\"\n  }, mdx(\"h3\", _extends({\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, {\n    \"id\": \"the-red-light-stop\"\n  }), \"The red light stop\"), mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"In pre-covid times a lot of us would spend time in our cars in traffic jams or red lights! I\\u2019m sure that\\u2019ll return pretty soon with the vaccine hitting the markets.\\nSo everytime you hit a stop, instead of succumbing to road rage, take a minute to take in some deep breaths and be present in the moment.\\nIt\\u2019s a nice reminder to ourselves to take a deep breath and pause when we feel \\u201Cstuck\\u201D.\"))), mdx(\"h2\", {\n    \"id\": \"nutrition\"\n  }, \"Nutrition\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"This is by far the toughest challenge you\\u2019ll ever face if you \", mdx(\"em\", {\n    parentName: \"p\"\n  }, \"really\"), \" enjoy eating, especially if you snack consistently, or frequently visit fast food/restaurants.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Now I\\u2019m not saying to NEVER eat \\u201Cunhealthy\\u201D things! That\\u2019s going to be impossible! I eat junk food every so often and ice cream is consistently present in my fridge.\\nIt\\u2019s more about being mindful of how they\\u2019re affecting you and what\\u2019s the best way to find balance.\"), mdx(\"ul\", null, mdx(\"li\", {\n    parentName: \"ul\"\n  }, mdx(\"h3\", _extends({\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, {\n    \"id\": \"switch-the-narrative-around-unhealthy-foods\"\n  }), \"Switch the narrative around unhealthy foods\"), mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"The first and foremost thing you\\u2019ll need to do is switch the narrative in your mind around these foods! Instead of focusing on the instant gratification you\\u2019ll get from finishing that entire tub of ice cream,\\nthink about how icky that may make you feel in the near future and longer term. Everytime you are about to ingest something, think about how it\\u2019s affecting you mental/physical health and ask if you really need it.\")), mdx(\"li\", {\n    parentName: \"ul\"\n  }, mdx(\"h3\", _extends({\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, {\n    \"id\": \"keep-your-hands-busy\"\n  }), \"Keep your hands busy\"), mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"If you\\u2019re a frequent snacker, pick some hobbies that keep your hands busy! I knew someone who took up knitting and shed off 10+ pounds in a month simply by not snacking constantly.\")), mdx(\"li\", {\n    parentName: \"ul\"\n  }, mdx(\"h3\", _extends({\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, {\n    \"id\": \"portion-control\"\n  }), \"Portion control\"), mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"This is the best advice I\\u2019ve ever recieved and it seems to be the core of any proper eating plan. Instead of an entire plate full of Mac n Cheese, allocate some portion to veggies and protein to get the food that\\u2019s good for you in addition to the flavor you crave.\")), mdx(\"li\", {\n    parentName: \"ul\"\n  }, mdx(\"h3\", _extends({\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, {\n    \"id\": \"meal-planning\"\n  }), \"Meal planning\"), mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"Figuring out what meals you\\u2019re going to eat in advance can save you loads of planning/contemplating time throughout the week and you can focus your energy on other things.\\nIt also helps lighten your mental to-do list and there are MANY websites now that can create healthy eating plans for you for free! People who meditate or appear to be calm or have been training for years aren\\u2019t machines.\\nYou don\\u2019t suddenly start controlling your emotions, you just stop letting those emotions control you. That\\u2019s it, this mantra will change your perspective, your behaviour, your actions in such a formidable way, it\\u2019s almost unreal.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"When we can look at a situation for what it is instead of what we perceive it to be, we allow ourselves to understand and process it better. You will still feel, you will still get hurt, dazed, confused, etc.\\nBut you will have the toolset to stop, process, understand, and act accordingly.\\nDaniel Goleman talks about how anger is a secondary emotion in his book \", mdx(\"a\", _extends({\n    parentName: \"p\"\n  }, {\n    \"href\": \"https://amzn.to/38l6Fjb\",\n    \"target\": \"_blank\",\n    \"rel\": \"noreferrer\"\n  }), \"Emotional Intelligence\"), \".\\nHe explains, that whenever we feel anger, underneath we\\u2019re actually either afraid, scared, or are being driven by some other primary emotion. That\\u2019s why people always say not to make a decision when you\\u2019re angry!\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"Practises like meditation implores you to sit down with yourself and truly understand what is going on within you without any judgments. Why would you want to silence your mind anyway, it\\u2019s a beautiful thing\\u201D and my mind went \\u201CYou\\u2019re g-dang right it is\\u201D.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"To sorta repeat what I wrote in the section above, the core of meditation is non-judgement! By not judging, we can focus on facts and circumstances and take mindful steps. I\\u2019ll also briefly touch on the word \\u201Cmindfulness\\u201D as it\\u2019s generally tied together with meditation.\\nSimply put, meditation is an excercise while mindfulness is a state of being. When you\\u2019re more mindful of your surroundings, you are able to act better on it. \", mdx(\"a\", _extends({\n    parentName: \"p\"\n  }, {\n    \"href\": \"https://chopra.com/articles/whats-the-difference-between-meditation-and-mindfulness\",\n    \"target\": \"_blank\",\n    \"rel\": \"noreferrer\"\n  }), \"Checkout\"), \" post on Deepak Chopra\\u2019s website that may help elaborate more on it.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"As it generally happens with older traditions, meditation has been adapted by many in many ways across the world to \\u201Cfit\\u201D different needs. I will write about the ones I personally practise or have closely observed.\"), mdx(\"ul\", null, mdx(\"li\", {\n    parentName: \"ul\"\n  }, mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"Mindfulness Meditation\"), mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"  This is the most famous form of meditation and excellent to start off with. You get in a comfortable position, close your eyes, take deep breaths and observe your thoughts.\\nYou don\\u2019t judge em, you don\\u2019t stop em, you don\\u2019t even try to figure out why they\\u2019re there. You simply train to understand any patterns between them and learning more about how your mind works.\")), mdx(\"li\", {\n    parentName: \"ul\"\n  }, mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"Focused Meditation\"), mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"  This one\\u2019s quite common in religious groups but also a bit hard. You focus on a singular thing and maintain focus for as long as possible.\\nYou can either count beads on your fingers, focus on a certain sound with a certain pattern, or observe your breathing. I generally just sit there and count my breathing slowly, inwards and outwards.\\nEverytime my mind wanders or some thought takes my focus away, I restart the count and try again.\")), mdx(\"li\", {\n    parentName: \"ul\"\n  }, mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"Movement Meditation\"), mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"  Have you ever walked around the park and seen people slowly move around practising a certain set of martial art movements? They\\u2019re practising this kind of meditation.\\nMany people argue that Movement meditation is just Mindfulness meditation with an activity and I do agree with that statement to some extent.\\nSo if you prefer that over sitting in one spot, definitely give it a try. The aim is to bring all your attention to each movement you are doing and staying in the dynamic present.\")), mdx(\"li\", {\n    parentName: \"ul\"\n  }, mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"Mantra Meditation\"), mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"  This one\\u2019s a lot more famous in the Eastern culture. You repeat a certain phrase, word, or sound over and over and bring all your attention to it.\\nIn Hinduism, people chant the word \\u201COM\\u201D and it is \", mdx(\"a\", _extends({\n    parentName: \"p\"\n  }, {\n    \"href\": \"https://www.hinduamerican.org/blog/5-things-to-know-about-om\",\n    \"target\": \"_blank\",\n    \"rel\": \"noreferrer\"\n  }), \"believed\"), \" to have major physical, mental, and spiritual significance.\")), mdx(\"li\", {\n    parentName: \"ul\"\n  }, mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"Incremental relaxation\"), mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"  By far my favorite while for when I\\u2019m having a sleepless night. You slowly start to tighten and relax different body parts starting from top to bottom and then you do the same with ALL your muscles.\\nNot only does it slowly help relax and increase awareness of your body parts, the tensing and relaxation of entire body part is perceived to be similar to an orgasm to help you relax.\")), mdx(\"li\", {\n    parentName: \"ul\"\n  }, mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"Visualization Meditation\"), mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"  This one\\u2019s also a favorite one especially with the whole world in lockdown. You sit in one spot and slowly build up and image of where you want to be! For e.g. if you were thinking of a beach, you can start off with imagining the sand,\\nthen the water, the air, the birds, the water touching your feet and so on. Once you get a bit good at it, it\\u2019s nothing less than a mental teleportation \\uD83D\\uDE0D\")), mdx(\"li\", {\n    parentName: \"ul\"\n  }, mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"Love/Gratitude/Forgiveness Meditation\"), mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"  At last, the meditation I do everytime I want to feel good about life, or when I\\u2019m feeling any emotion towards someone I\\u2019d like to free myself off. The theme is simple, you sit down and imagine being in a room with someone and execute a mental conversation with them.\\nIf you love them it\\u2019s good to describe in detail what about them you love and how grateful you are about the impact they had in your life. If you\\u2019re angry at someone you can talk about your feelings and how you feel.\\nThis practise sometimes gets discouraged by people with the justification \\u201CPeople who have these conversations in their head, won\\u2019t be having these in person.\\u201D.\"), mdx(\"p\", {\n    parentName: \"li\"\n  }, \"  In my experience, I have not found this to be true! Quite the opposite actually!
